The Bloemfontein Rose Festival had its inception in 1976, when a couple
of council members decided that such a festival was appropriate, as
Bloemfontein was known as the City of Roses. It attracts thousands of
visitors and rose lovers from across South Africa and the world to
experience and participate in this spectacle of roses and assortment of
events taking place throughout the city.

One of Bloemfontein's treasures is the 70 ha botanical garden on its northwestem fringe. Some 5 ha of the garden have been developed to display and preserve as much of the Free State flora as will grow there - with particular emphasis on species such as Crinum, klipdagga and witgousblom.
Rustfontein Dam, a weekend playground for the people of Botshabelo, is 50 km east of Bloemfontein just off the Bloemfontein/Thaba 'Nchu road (R64). Braai and ablution facilities are located along the shoreline.

Bunkers are mostly found only around the greens and a few shallow water hazards make holes 5, 6, 8, 9 and 12 very interesting. The Golf Club was recently awarded the prestigious Golden Arrow Award for being the most outstanding sports club in the Free State and Northern Cape.
Golf officially began in Bloemfontein when Dr CH Bidwell placed an advert in the local paper THE FRIEND, that simply read "It is the purpose to form a golfing club in Bloemfontein for which purpose a meeting of those interested in the game and desirous of joining the club will be held in the council chambers at 6 o'clock on Saturday afternoon next, 3rd February 1894". The names of twenty gentlemen were enrolled as members of the club. The leading golf architect Robert Grimsdell was brought in to lay out a fully grass course.
The well known 18 kilometre Visser Hiking Trail takes the Ladybrand visitor through the magnificent countryside and includes ancient sites of rock art. Mountain Biking and horse back riding are also popular activities offered in Ladybrand.
